FAQ

What is the Hims & Hers business model?

Hims & Hers Health is a direct-to-consumer telehealth and prescription subscription platform. The company combines an asynchronous telehealth consultation layer with a direct-to-consumer pharmacy subscription. Customers register on the company’s website, complete a clinical questionnaire, are evaluated by a licensed clinician, and if appropriate receive a monthly subscription delivery of prescription medication or personal-care product.

How the model works

The product catalog is organized around four broad categories: men’s sexual-health (erectile-dysfunction medications), hair-loss treatment, skincare, and mental health. Each prescription medication subscription is preceded by a telehealth consultation that satisfies the standard prescribing-physician requirement. The company operates its own pharmacy network to fulfill the prescriptions, which gives it control over both the clinical-recommendation layer and the fulfillment layer.

Revenue comes from monthly subscription fees on the medications and products. The company does not run a separate membership program with a standalone fee — the subscription IS the customer relationship. Most products renew monthly by default and customers can cancel or pause their subscriptions through the customer portal.

How the unit economics work

Hims & Hers operates on a recurring-revenue model with substantial customer-acquisition spend through paid digital marketing. As of 2024, the company reported approximately 2 million subscribers, $1.4 billion in annual revenue, and improving operating margins after several years of unprofitability driven by acquisition-cost investment.

Customer lifetime value tracks how long subscribers maintain their monthly prescription deliveries. Hair-loss medications produce particularly high lifetime values because the underlying condition is chronic and customers tend to stay on the product for years once the regimen is established.

How this differs from Consumer Direct Marketing

The two models share the recurring monthly purchase pattern but differ in three structural ways:

  • Referral compensation layer. Hims & Hers does not pay customers to refer other customers. Customer acquisition is funded entirely through paid digital marketing. Consumer Direct Marketing programs pay referring members a commission tied to the verified product purchases of customers they introduced.

  • Clinical gating. Hims & Hers requires a telehealth consultation before prescription products ship, which is a regulatory requirement under U.S. prescription law. Consumer Direct Marketing programs sell non-prescription consumer products without that gating.

  • Subscription mechanism. Hims & Hers customers sign up for a specific product subscription. Consumer Direct Marketing members shop a broader catalog each month and choose what they purchase.

Both are legitimate, well-established recurring-revenue commerce models that serve different customer needs.
